Slot machines have benefited immensely from technology advances and development, but this same progress has contributed to the appearance on many myths about slots and how to play to win etc. Let’s have a look at some of the most widespread myths and address them from the Casino Samurai point of view.
A machine that has not been paying for a while is due to hit
Not exactly – modern slot machines use random number generators to determine payouts and jackpots and it is all but impossible to anticipate if a particular machine is due to hit. Each spin, regardless of whether you are playing classic, video or progressive slots, is in no way related to what happened previously or how the machine will display the next combination of symbols – if, let’s say, on average the winning combinations are configured once for every thousand spins, this number is only an average and not a precise indication that a particular spin will inevitably lead to a payout. In the game of slots, it’s all about luck and entertainment!
Casinos programme their slot machines to payout at certain times
In short, another myth! All slots have a computer chip that calculates pay back percentages based on an algorithmic, random number generator. All the settings responsible for the process are inbuilt at the factory, so to change settings casinos would have to change the chip, which is never an alternative. Because changing chips is both expensive and time consuming, it makes a lot more sense for gaming companies to honour payouts and avoid unnecessary, brand damaging disruptions.
If someone hits a jackpot on the machine you just left, you can automatically assume you would have won had you stayed on
False! There are no clearly defined patterns responsible for payouts or jackpots, the random number generator continuously cycles numbers even at times when the slot machine isn’t being used, so no luck there either! The numbers picked, which determine the combination of symbols displayed, are generated within a micro second, therefore it is highly unlikely you would have won had you stayed at the machine in question.
As we can see, courage to play bravely and luck are at least as important as any strategy one can think of when it come to playing slots, whether in a traditional casino or online. More myths from Casino Samurai to follow shortly!

I’ve been saying this for a long time – relying on patterns etc for slot machines to hit is a waste of time, there is very little else, apart from luck, that determines whether a player loses or wins
